The sky is too smoky and hazy to do astronomy here tonight. Let’s hope for clear skies another time.
Join us on Sunday, August 12 to watch the Perseid meteor shower and observe planets, double stars, a star cluster and a galaxy. If the sky is clear, we may be able to catch a glimpse of Venus and a thin crescent moon around 8:30. Jupiter and Saturn may be visible by 9:00. By 10:00 we should see the double star Albireo. Then by 10:30 it will be dark enough to start seeing some meteors (up to one per minute if we’re lucky).
For seeing meteors, it’s best to lie down and watch as much of the sky as possible. We have some benches with camping mats and and reclining chairs. If you have your own comfortable chairs where you can lean back, bring them! A pair of binoculars may also come in handy. Be sure to dress warmly as it gets pretty chilly after sunset.
If it looks like we need to cancel due to poor sky conditions, I’ll post a notice here. Also, you can call me on my cell phone, 206-794-6928. Hope to see you at our home in Greenbank on Sunday the 12th!
