Milky Way Galaxy
We took this picture of the sky by setting our digital camera on the hood of our car and using the remote shutter release.
The bright star in the lower left is Altair, in the constellation of
Aquila. The bright area just to the right of center is in Scutum. Dust clouds can be seen blocking out light from stars near the
center of our galaxy.
The Milky Galaxy is about 100,000 light-years in
diameter and our Sun is about 30,000 light years from the center.
