Ring Nebula, M57 The Ring Nebula is in the constellation of Lyra, about 6 1/2 degrees southeast of the bright star Vega. About 20,000 years ago, a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) cloud of gas was expelled from a dying star. Today that torus is 0.4 light-years in diameter and still expanding. Its apparent diameter is 76 arc-seconds today and is increasing at a rate of about one arc-second per century. |
