Comet Machholz, C/2004 Q2

This comet was discovered by Don Machholz of Colfax, California on August 27, 2004.

The animation below was assembled from images taken at the Tinyblue Observatory beginning at 11:42 pm on January 3, 2005.

Images were taken with an SBIG ST-7E CCD camera through a Takahashi FSQ-106 at f/5. The comet was located 8 degrees south of the Pleiades high in the southern sky (RA 03 39 43.050, Dec +1 44 02.36). Exposures were each 45 seconds long. the frame rate in this animation is 220 seconds per frame.
